Tulare County's Salvation Army: Feeding Families During the Holidays

The high cost of food in Tulare County has led many residents to seek assistance as the holiday season approaches. The line at the Tulare Salvation Army on Wednesday morning wound around the building, yet the wait for free food boxes was deemed worthwhile by those who would otherwise go hungry. Somalia Crossley, a mother of three with a working husband, expressed, "If it wasn't for the Salvation Army giving us a meal, then we most likely wouldn't be having Thanksgiving this year."

Price Increases and Thanksgiving Meals

This year, the average cost for a Thanksgiving meal for 10 people in the West has risen to approximately $68, which is about $4 more than in 2023. Savanah, a working mom with four kids, said, "Everything is expensive. Every time we go into a store, it's like we couldn't even get a turkey this year. So, coming here this year to get a turkey for free is awesome and we love it." Twice a month, the Tulare Salvation Army distributes over 500 food boxes to hundreds of people in need. This week's distribution holds special significance as it means many families will have a Thanksgiving meal.

Donations and Community Support

The Salvation Army relies on donations to make these giveaways possible. Eagle Mountain Casino provided 100 turkeys to local families. Julio Vasquez, who has been with the Salvation Army for 35 years, said, "These food boxes are especially good because they have turkey, jam, and all the ingredients needed to have a special Thanksgiving dinner." Vasquez also noted the change he has witnessed since he started. "It was rare to see a working family coming to us. It was rare to see a whole family coming to us for assistance. But now we see working families and seniors with difficulties."

Working Families in Need

Working families like Sylvia's face financial stress when it comes to feeding their children. Sylvia said, "With the help they are giving us now, we can have something to celebrate Thanksgiving." The Salvation Army recognizes the holiday season's financial strain and is committed to helping. Next Tuesday, the Salvation Army in Visalia will be giving away food boxes.
