Dear parents and friends who care about children's growth, have you noticed that your children show different social or behavioral characteristics from others? Are you worried that they may face challenges that are not understood?
Today, we hope to take you to a scientific understanding of autism (autism spectrum disorder, ASD) through this article, and provide support directions for families in need.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder of the brain, mainly manifested by difficulties in social communication, repetitive behaviors and narrow interests. It is not a "disease", but a difference in the way the brain processes information. According to research, 1 in 54 children may be diagnosed (CDC data). Early detection and scientific intervention can significantly help children grow!
If a child has multiple of the following symptoms, it is worth noting:
Avoid eye contact, rarely actively share interests
Difficulty understanding other people's emotions or body language
Delayed language development, or repeating specific phrases
Difficulty taking turns to respond during a conversation
Stick to a fixed process, resist change (such as route, diet)
Abnormal focus on specific things (such as rotating objects, numbers)
📝Preliminary self-test: 10 questions that parents can pay attention to
(⚠️ For reference only, diagnosis by a professional doctor is required)
1. Does the child rarely point to things of interest?
2. Is there a lack of interest in children of the same age or games?
3. Does the child often repeat the arrangement of toys instead of pretend play?
4. Is the child slow to respond to calling his name?
5. Is it difficult to understand jokes or figurative language?
6. Is there strong anxiety about daily changes?
7. Are there abnormal repetitive body movements (such as shaking, clapping)?
8. Is there extreme resistance to certain materials/sounds?
9. Is the language ability significantly behind that of peers?
10. Is it difficult to express needs through facial expressions?
If more than 5 items persist, it is recommended to make an appointment for professional evaluation!
Early intervention is the key! According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the following methods can be combined:
✅ Behavioral intervention
-ABA applied behavior analysis: improve social and life skills through positive reinforcement
✅ Language and occupational therapy
- Speech therapy (ST) improves communication skills
- Occupational therapy (OT) improves sensory sensitivity and fine motor skills
✅ Family support
- Establish a structured schedule and use visual cues to reduce anxiety
- Avoid forced social interaction and respect the child's rhythm of expression
✅ Education adjustment
- Seek inclusive education support and customize personalized learning plans
The core feature of autism is neurodiversity, and each child has unique talents and challenges. Please remember:
🔹 Autism is not the fault of parents, nor is it the child's "lack of effort"
🔹 Avoid superstition of "cure remedies" and choose evidence-based intervention methods
🔹 Replace pressure with patience and replace correction with companionship
If there is an autistic family around you, please spread kindness:
An inclusive smile and an active adaptation can become the light that illuminates them.
