Sheldon Keefe Retained as Devils Coach After Performance Review

Instructions

Sheldon Keefe is set to maintain his position as the New Jersey Devils' head coach, as confirmed by multiple sources on Tuesday. This decision follows a thorough review by newly appointed general manager Sunny Mehta, who assumed his role on April 16th. While Keefe remains at the helm, the organization has initiated changes within its coaching structure, including the departure of goaltending coach Dave Rogalski and the internal transfer of assistant coach Sergei Brylin.

The announcement underscores Keefe's ongoing tenure with the Devils, extending his two-year contract. Prior to joining New Jersey in May 2024, Keefe spent five seasons (2019-2024) as the head coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his inaugural season with the Devils, he successfully guided the team to the playoffs, where they faced a 4-1 series loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference first round.

Despite achieving the same number of victories (42) in the 2025-2026 season, the Devils did not secure a playoff spot, thereby interrupting a six-season streak of postseason appearances for teams under Keefe's leadership. His overall coaching record with the Devils stands at 84 wins, 70 losses, and 10 ties over two seasons, contributing to a career total of 296 wins, 167 losses, and 50 ties across seven seasons.

The shake-up in the coaching staff includes the departure of Dave Rogalski, who had been with the team since the 2020-2021 season. Under his watch, the Devils' goals-against average increased from 2.68 in 2024-2025 to 3.09 in the most recent season. General Manager Sunny Mehta brings a track record of success, having previously served as assistant general manager and head of analytics for the Florida Panthers from 2023-2026, during which he earned two Stanley Cup rings.

The New Jersey Devils have officially confirmed that Sheldon Keefe will continue in his role as head coach. This decision comes after a comprehensive evaluation conducted by new General Manager Sunny Mehta. While Keefe retains his position, the organization has made adjustments to the support staff, including the reassignment of an assistant coach and the departure of the goaltending coach.
