In a significant move to revitalize Rochester’s cultural landscape, the Rochester Broadway Theatre League (RBTL) has secured over $2.9 million from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). This funding forms part of an expansive $86 million allocation by NYSCA to support 134 capital projects across the state. RBTL is spearheading a $65 million initiative, launched last November, aimed at transforming the West Herr Performing Arts Center into a multi-stage complex that echoes its original 1920s grandeur. The project seeks to restore and enhance the historic center, once a prominent Masonic temple in the Northeast, turning it into a world-class entertainment venue for the region.
A Glimpse into the Restoration Journey
Amidst the vibrant energy of downtown Rochester, the West Herr Performing Arts Center stands as a testament to architectural heritage. RBTL, the owner and operator of the complex, embarked on Project Restouration with a vision to breathe new life into this landmark. The first phase focuses on improving accessibility, flexibility, and amenities. Notably, work on the rear entrance is nearing completion, facilitating easier access to the arts center and auditorium theatre. Two renovated elevators now connect visitors to the second-floor theatre lobby and additional lounge/concession areas equipped with modern restrooms.
The NYSCA grant will fund the restoration of the iconic Main Street façade, while plans are underway for new backstage artist spaces. Future phases include expanded lobbies, additional entry points, revamped concession areas, and more restroom facilities. Historical spaces within the building will also be restored and repurposed to host diverse performances, enhancing the venue's versatility. According to Erika Mallin, NYSCA executive director, such transformative projects strengthen communities, promote tourism, and encourage innovation in the arts sector.
Project Restouration aims to conclude by 2030, coinciding with the building's centennial anniversary.
As a journalist covering cultural developments, it’s inspiring to witness how historic preservation can coexist with modern enhancements. This ambitious endeavor not only honors Rochester’s rich past but also paves the way for a dynamic future in performing arts. By blending tradition with innovation, RBTL sets an example for other cities seeking to rejuvenate their cultural landmarks. Such initiatives remind us of the enduring power of art and architecture to unite communities and inspire generations.
