New Ulm, River Valley, Sibley East, and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet have all sent their relay teams to the highly anticipated Class AA State Track and Field Tournament. With numerous records broken and sectional titles claimed, these athletes are poised to make waves at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

The excitement builds as regional track stars prepare to showcase their talents on a larger stage. These young athletes have already proven themselves through relentless dedication and teamwork, setting new benchmarks in their respective schools' histories.

Breaking Barriers: Record-Setting Performances

Among the standout performances this season is New Ulm’s boys 4×100 relay team, which shattered the school record with an impressive time of 43.45 seconds. This quartet, comprising Isaac Friese, Hunter Heil, Jackson Ocampo, and Jamison Portner, has demonstrated exceptional speed and precision in baton exchanges.

In addition to the sprints, New Ulm’s 4×400 relay team also etched their names into the annals of local sports history. Dain Barie, Michael Hames, George Gag, and Sullivan Gusso achieved a remarkable time of 3:24.06 during the sectional meet. While they fell short of claiming first place, their determination remains unwavering as they aim for higher achievements at the state level.

Achieving Sectional Success: Leading the Charge

River Valley's 4×400 boys relay team emerged victorious in their section with a blistering time of 3:29.59. Composed of Noah Christensen, Luka Fernandez, Lucas Hensch, and Matt Groebner, this group not only set a program record but also secured their spot among the elite competitors at the state championships.

Beyond the relays, individual athletes from River Valley continue to shine. Their 4×800 boys team, featuring Luka Fernandez, Matthew Fernandez, Christensen, and Groebner, qualified with a season-best time of 8:22.77. Meanwhile, the girls 4×800 team, led by Emmie McCone, Lydia Dauer, Marissa Pabst, and Katie Thram, showcased resilience by finishing second with a time of 10:06.48, proving that hard work pays off even against formidable opponents.

Paving the Way: Emerging Talent Across Regions

Sibley East added its name to the list of contenders with the 4×800 boys team, captained by Julio Alejandro, Gage Horstman, Mausten Krueger, and Gavin Pomplun. Winning their section with a stellar time of 8:22.31, these athletes exemplify what it means to push boundaries and excel under pressure.

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet (LCWM/N) contributed significantly to the roster of qualifiers. Their 4×400 boys team, including Henry Oscarson, Isaac Rodman, Aidan Moeller, and Charlie Gengler, achieved a commendable season-best time of 3:32.6. Furthermore, Gengler individually qualified for the 800-meter race, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to excellence.

Individual Achievements: Spotlighting Standout Performers

Several non-relay athletes deserve recognition for their exceptional accomplishments. Among them is Madelia’s Josiah DeMaris, who earned a berth in the boys 3,200-meter event. His endurance and focus reflect the qualities necessary to compete at such a high level.

From LCWM/N, Levi Freyberg claimed the title of section champion in boys pole vault, showcasing technical prowess and athletic finesse. Similarly, Aidan McCue of Sibley East advanced in the boys triple jump, reinforcing the depth of talent within the region. Drew Turgeon, another LCWM/N representative, excelled in both boys discus and shot put, securing spots in two separate events.

Female Athletes Making Waves: Breaking Records and Setting Standards

River Valley’s Marley Hewitt established a new school record in the girls 400 meters with a time of 59.73 seconds, earning her a coveted spot at the state championships. Her performance highlights the growing prominence of female athletes in track and field competitions.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral’s Kamryn Davey made significant strides in the girls triple jump, holding the school record with a leap of 34 feet, 10 inches. Additionally, her qualification in the 100-meter hurdles underscores her well-rounded abilities. Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop’s Annie Wersal also qualified in girls discus, contributing further to the diverse array of talents represented at the tournament.
