In a remarkable display of talent and determination, the mixed doubles team from Franklin High School has claimed second place in the Class 6A UIL Tennis State Championships. Kendall Olivas and Ayden Fraire, both juniors, showcased their exceptional skills by defeating numerous formidable opponents before falling short in the championship match. Despite the loss, their journey to the finals reflects an impressive season marked by personal achievements and regional pride.
The road to the state championship was paved with hard work and dedication for Olivas and Fraire. The duo faced off against some of Texas's top teams, culminating in their thrilling semifinal victory over Round Rock Westwood's Arjun Rajan and Lily Wang. This win secured their spot in the final, where they ultimately met Gabriel Segubiense and Jastine Escamos from Fort Bend Clements High School. Playing at San Antonio’s Northside Tennis Center, the Franklin pair fought valiantly but were edged out in straight sets, finishing their season on a high note nonetheless.
Both players expressed immense satisfaction with their accomplishments. For Ayden Fraire, representing El Paso on such a grand stage brought immense pride. "Putting El Paso on the map is a great feeling," he remarked, acknowledging that while gold would have been ideal, silver still signifies a significant achievement. Similarly, Kendall Olivas marveled at the experience, stating how surreal it felt to achieve so much success alongside her partner. She eagerly anticipates what lies ahead next year, crediting their growth to the relentless effort poured into training throughout the past twelve months.
This outstanding performance capped off a stellar season for the dynamic duo. Individually, Olivas boasted an impressive record of 24-1, while Fraire maintained an equally commendable tally of 16-1. Their dominance was evident even in earlier rounds, including their decisive semifinal triumph which set the tone for their eventual runner-up finish.
As they reflect on this extraordinary season, Olivas and Fraire can take immense pride in having not only represented their school admirably but also placed El Paso firmly within the spotlight of competitive tennis. With another year ahead, expectations are high for these young athletes who continue to inspire through their perseverance and skill.
